This lovely modern art painting was painted by "Harrry Day" when he had is gallery on Dennison Rd in Essex CT in 1965. This is a double. Harry Gray painted each side with a different subject. The front is a series of barns and the back is entitled "Wharves". Harry Ivan Day, Jr., was born 11/17/1912 in Haverhill, MA, and died 2/18/2001 in Bradenton, FL. He descended from Joseph Lewis, one of the first settlers of Boothbay, ME. A renowned photographer and artist, Mr. Day owned the Harry Day Gallery on Union Street in Boothbay Harbor for 45 years. His addressed included NYC, Forest Hills, NY, Westport, CT, Essex, CT, and Jackson, NH, where he had an art gallery 1969-1991. He attended Staunton Military Academy, Chauncy Hall, Massachusetts School of Art, and the New York Institute of Photography. He was the sole photographer for Van Cleef and Arpels Jewelry for eight years. He also photographed such celebrities as Lilli Pons, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Babe Paley, Marlene Dietrich, and Solomon Guggenheim. He studied painting at the National Academy of Design and the Art Student League. He was the first American photographer to exhibit at England's Royal Photographic Society, and became a Fellow. Mr. Day married his wife Jannis in 1940. She died in 1993. His one-man shows include 8 at Deeley Gallery, Manchester,VT; Farnsworth Museum, Rockland, ME; Fairleigh Dickinson College, NJ; NAD, NYC; Grand Central Gallery, NYC; Maine Art Historical Society; Wendy Glass Gallery, NYC; Silvermine Guild, CT; Little Gallery, Philadelphia; and Bloomfield Colege, NJ. His work has been displayed at Boston Museum and Dallas Museum. The painting measures 36 by 48 inches. The original frame measures 49 by 37 inches.
