This "Wilhelm Kray oil on canvas entitled Venus Aphrodite" measures 62 and one half inches high by 44 and one half inches wide inside the frame, and 73 and one half inches high by 55 and one half inches wide outside the frame. Wilhelm Kray was a French schooled German painter of portraits, landscapes, and historical and genre scenes. He was born in Berlin in 1828 and died in Munich in 1889. Kray started out as a silversmith, but ended up studying painting in Paris. After touring Italy and Austria, he settled in Bavaria and became a professor. His work hangs in the Museum of Cologne and the Museum of Gratz. This very painting "Venus Aphrodite" is listed in E. Benezit as having been sold on March 7, 1911 for 8500 francs. This exquisite, museum quality painting is in excellent condition and is mounted in an impressive carved wood gold leaf frame with nameplate.
